Publication Design for McSweeney’s.

These are cover designs for McSweeney’s Dictionary Set, which were presented at the McSweeney’s Bookstore in Minneapolis, MN. They include a dictionary, a thesaurus, and a grammar guide.

Unconventional word play and typography were used as a way to play fun at ideas of modern type, while using more experimental applications of type as art. By physically manipulated letters, different appearances were achieved. The physical manipulation is then scanned and compressed to become flat and digital. To achieve contrast in texture, the manipulated letters were handled in a digital sense to showcase how pixilated they had become in this process, unlike their smooth and uniform counterparts. This contrast pokes fun at how type has been pushed in its modern applications.
